Maria Bucur

John W. Hill Professor - 1996

Maria Bucur
Maria Bucur is the John V. Hill Professor of East European History and Gender Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington. She received her Ph.D. from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1996. Her teaching and research focus on the gender analysis of the recent past in Eastern Europe, with a focus on Romania and gender, and thematically ranging from questions of war and memory to the history of eugenics and sexual violence. Her recent publications include Gendering Modernism. A Historical Reappraisal of the Canon (2017), The Century of Women: How Women Have Changed the World since 1900 (2018), and The Birth of Democratic Citizenship: Women in Modern Romania, with Mihaela Miroiu (2018). Professor Bucur is the recipient of many national and international awards and grants, among them two collaborative research NEH grants, three IREX grants, two ACLS grants, an AAUW grant, a Woodrow Wilson Center fellowship, and a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research grant. She was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from the National University for Political Science and Public Administration in Bucharest. She has given talks at conferences in Europe, North America, and Australia, and served as coordinator for the women's and gender history network of the European Social Science History Conference. Between 2011 and 2014 she led the initiative to establish the School of Global and International Studies at IU and served as its inaugural Associate Dean. In 2018, Bucur received an honorary doctorate from the National University for Political Science and Public Administration (SNSPA) in Bucharest
