Anna Storniolo

Dr. Anna Storniolo earned her A.B. from Harvard University in 1977 and her M.D. from Stanford University in 1981. She completed both her residency and fellowship at the University of Rochester in 1985 and 1987, respectively. She joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2000 as a visiting clinical professor of medicine. Since joining, she has held numerous titles and appointments, including the honorary title Andrew and Peggy Thompson Professor Emeritus of Hema of Hematology/Oncology, Professor Emeritus of Medicine, and Senior Research Professor Medicine.
As a physician and clinical scientist, Dr. Storniolo's career focus is on compassionate, state-of-the-art oncologic care in the context of an academic setting. She is an active participant in bringing science to the bedside and clinical observations back to the laboratory. Dr. Storniolo's commitment to translational research and to the importance of biologically-driven clinical trials, with emphasis on biospecimens, is seen through her various academic activities.
Dr. Storniolo served as co-chair of the Her-2 Working Group within the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium (TBCRC) from its inception in 2006 to 2012. She has been the lead investigator representing IUSM from the beginning of this consortium. In 2001, Dr. Storniolo founded Indiana's first Breast Cancer Prevention Program, which provides individualized counseling and surveillance to hundreds of women at high risk for breast cancer. In addition, Dr. Storniolo is the founder and executive director of the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank at IU Simon Cancer Center, a unique resource of annotated breast samples from healthy volunteers. By providing the ability to correlate risk factors with changes in breast tissue, the Bank hopes to unlock the secret of breast carcinogenesis. The Bank currently has annotated breast specimens from over 5,000 individuals.
