William McD. Armstrong began his teaching career at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in 1962 as an associate professor of physiology. He was promoted to full professor in 1971. In 1984, he earned the title of Distinguished Professor of Physiology. He retired from IUSM with his emeritus title in 1992.
