The name of Joseph C. Muhler is synonymous with fluoride chemistry and dental health throughout the world. His basic research led to development of the fluoride dentifrice which has brought freedom from dental caries to millions of persons and has greatly enhanced the international reputation and the resources of Indiana University.
Muhler earned his B.S. in 1947, his DD.S. in 1948, and his Ph.D. in 1952 from Indiana University, distinguishing himself in dental biochemistry laboratories and making a significant discovery concerning stannous fluoride and dental enamel. Upon graduation, he committed himself to a life of research and discovery.
Dr. Muhler was an energetic researcher, very imaginative and tenacious. His love of teaching defined his service as a faculty member at Indiana University-Purdue University's School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. As the author of scientific articles and books, and as an authoritative consultant, he promoted professional awareness of new developments in dentistry and nutrition.
