John W. Hill

John W. Hill received a B.A. in History from West Georgia College in 1967, and earned a J.D. from the Atlanta Law School in 1976. He then received a B.S. in Accounting in 1982 and an M.B.A. in 1980 from Berry College. In 1986, he earned his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Iowa.
Hill has served in many capacities. From 1973 to 1978, he served as the Vice President of the Commercial Loan Division of the National Bank of Georgia, and from 1978 to 1982, he was the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of the Home Federal Savings Bank. In 1986, he became adjunct faculty for the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and in 1996, he became a Professor of Accounting and Chairman of Systems and Accounting Graduate Programs.
At Indiana University, Hill became the Associate Dean of Research and Operations at the Kelley School of Business in 2001. He served as the Arthur M. Weimer Faculty Chair and a Professor of Accounting at IU from 2005 to 2010. Hill’s research interest focuses in business valuation, law & health care, risk management, financial disclosure & statement analysis, activity based management, business ethics, law, and accounting.
Hill served as a Senior Advisor to Richey, Mills & Associated LLP in Indianapolis from rom 1999 to 2003, and to Clifton Gunderson, LLP in Indianapolis from 2003 to 2010. Hill is also a retired Major General from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
Hill was the recipient of the Schuyler F. Otteson Teaching Excellence Award from the Delta Sigma Pi Chapter at Indiana University from 1988-1989, and the Lybrand Bronze Medal from the National Association of Accountants in 1990. He was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Institute of Management Accountants from 1991 to 1992, Alpha Kappa Psi Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence at Indiana University in 1991, and the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching at Indiana University in 1992. He was a Ernst & Young Faculty Fellow from 1992 to 1994, and the recipient of the Wildman Medal from the American Accounting Association/Deloitte & Touche in 1993. In 1996, he was Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash, and in 2003 was awarded the Kelley School of Business Innovative Teaching Award. Hill was a Faculty Fellow for Price Waterhouse, LLP from 1995 to 1998, and a member of IU’s Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Rank Professors since 2005.
