A Hoosier native from Brazil, Indiana, Dr. Holden earned an undergraduate pharmacy degree from Purdue University in 1958 and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1963. He served two years as a medical officer in the U.S. Army and spent four years as a family physician in Columbus, Indiana, before selecting radiology as his specialty. Following a residency at Vanderbilt University, he joined the IU faculty in 1973, achieving the rank of full professor in 1982. He served as chief of radiology at Wishard Hospital before accepting the chairmanship of the IU School of Medicine's Department of Radiology in 1991.
On November 1, 1995, Dr. Holden became the eighth dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and the eighth director of the IU Medical Center. He became the Walter J. Daly Professor in 1996. He is Director, Indiana University Medical Center and Director, Indiana Statewide Medical Education System. Dr. Holden serves on the boards of the Wishard Memorial Foundation, the Citizens Bank of Mooresville, the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, the Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research, the Regenstrief Foundation, and IU Health Partners, Inc.
He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences in 1992, the Bowen Distinguished Leadership Award from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993, and the Gold Medal Award from the Indiana Roentgen Society in 1997. He has served as a consultant to Eli Lilly & Company and the National Institutes of Health. Other professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, the Indianapolis Medical Society, the Radiologic Society of North America, and the Indiana Roentgen Society. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honorary society and gained membership as a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Biology. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology.
