Chen Zhu

Chen Zhu is a professor of earth and atmospheric sciences and Haydn Murray Professor of Applied Clay Mineralogy in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. He also serves as an adjunct professor of environmental sciences in the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and adjunct professor of environmental health. He joined IU’s faculty as an associate professor of geological sciences in 2004. Zhu received his B.Eng. from Chengdu College of Geology, his M.Sc. in Economic Geology from the University of Toronto, and his Ph.D. in Geology from Johns Hopkins University in 1992. His research interests include geochemical modeling; hydrogeochemistry and water resources; kinetics and thermodynamics of chemical reaction; and geological carbon sequestration (CCS).
Zhu was inducted as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2017, a fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America in 2016, and a fellow of the Geological Society of America in 2005. In 2009, he received a Fulbright scholarship to research at the University of Oslo in Norway. Zhu is also the recipient of the John Hem Excellence in Science and Engineering Award from the National Ground Water Association in 2006 and the Senior Associateship Award, National Research Council from the National Academy of Sciences in 2003. Since 2005, he has served as the associate editor of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.
