Amanda Blythe Diekman earned her B.A. from Kenyon College in 1995. She went on to earn her M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Diekman began her teaching career at Indiana University (IU) in 2018 as a professor of psychological and brain sciences. Diekman’s research focuses on how individuals navigate the social structure, and how the social structure influences the perceived and actual characteristics of groups. She is particularly interested in how gender roles have evolved. She is the director of the Social Roles lab at IU. Her lab studies how widespread beliefs about STEM fields that do not ide opportunities for societal advancement (such as opportunities for altruism or collaboration) negatively impact the engagement of women in STEM-related fields. Diekman has authored numerous publications that have appeared in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, and Personality and Social Psychology Review. She is also a fellow of several professional organizations, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology.
