Teresa Zimmers earned her B.S. in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990 and her Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2001. Zimmers joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2013 as an associate professor in the Department of Surgery and an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She was promoted to full professor and named the H.H. Gregg Professor of Cancer Research in 2019. Prior to joining the IUSM faculty, Zimmers held teaching positions at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Thomas Jefferson University’s Kimmel Cancer Center. Her research focuses on developing theories to control symptoms of early onset cachexia, a condition recognized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue that contributes directly to morbidity and mortality in diseases like organ failure, AIDS, burn, trauma, and cancer. A well-established clinical professional, Zimmers is associated with several premier professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Cancer Cachexia Society, and more.
