John B. Hickam Professor of Medicine - 1987 - 1990

August M. Watanabe
August M. Watanabe, M.D., had a transformative effect on the field of life sciences and, therefore, the human condition. Through his unyielding devotion to scientific inquiry and his tireless advocacy of translational research, he influenced the ability of researchers in Indiana and beyond to make advances that benefit the sick and infirm. Dr. Watanabe's career spanned academic medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, the pharmaceutical industry with Eli Lilly and Company, and biotechnology as represented by his work with Twilight Ventures, Marcadia and other organizations. In these roles he was also a major catalyst for attracting and retaining intellectual talent within Indiana. The net result was the advancement of each of the entities he touched so that their work could also have a profound effect on humanity.
