Andrea Ciccarelli earned an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1984. He completed both a graduate degree and PhD while at Columbia University, (1986-1990) in Italian and Comparative Literature, and Italian Studies respectively.

His interests focus on the concepts of migration, exile and borders in Italian literature and culture, as well as on the historical, artistic and cultural effects of 1968 on Italy. Ciccarelli has written on modern classics such as Manzoni, Foscolo, Pirandello, and Montale, as well as on contemporary authors (Pressburger, Claudio Magris, etc.). Along with serving as Dean of the Hutton Honors College, he also directs the Overseas Studies Summer Program in Florence, Italy.

In addition to being named, Provost Professor, Ciccarelli has also earned the following distinctions: Indiana University Outstanding Junior Faculty Fellowship, Teaching Excellence Recognition Award from the IU Trustees, Eric MarĂ­a Remarque Fellowship for European Studies, and the Mellon Fellowship Travel Grant.
