Dr. Wiebke received his A.B. degree from Duke University in 1979 magna cum laude, with honors in chemistry. He attended the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and graduated in 1983. His surgical internship and residency were completed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Wiebke performed a surgical oncology research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute from 1985-1987 and completed a gastrointestinal surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins in 1991. His surgical training also included six months as a registrar at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1991. He received an M.B.A. from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2003.

Dr. Wiebke joined the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery in 1991. He was promoted to Professor in 2004 and named the J. Stanley Battersby Professor of Surgery in January, 2006. He is currently the director of the Section of General Surgery and is the assistant program director of the IU General Surgery Residency.

Dr. Wiebke has received numerous teaching awards including the Professor of the Year in surgery from the graduating medical students and the Chief Residents' Teaching Award. Clinical and research interests include surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, sarcoma, and gastrointestinal disorders. He is a member of numerous national surgical organizations including the Central Surgical Association, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Association.
