Hasan U. Akay
Chancellor's Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering
Professor Akay was with IUPUI since 1980. He received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 1967 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 and 1974, respectively. Prior to joining IUPUI, he served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Chair of Civil Engineering at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey.
Professor Akay has had many years of research and teaching experience in the development of finite element and computational algorithms for the solution of multiphysics problems, including the development of high-performance parallel and dynamic load balancing algorithms for large-scale problems with broad range of applications in fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, biomechanics, material processes, and solid-fluid interactions. His primary activities in these areas include research, teaching, development, and technical consulting.
Professor Akay had been a consultant to various organizations on the utilization of the computational techniques and finite element codes he helped to develop. He published numerous technical papers, book chapters and reports (over 170) and presented lectures at various national and international conferences. He led the finite element and computational engineering research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IUPUI. He conducted numerous research projects funded by government agencies and industry.
Professor Akay served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics and the International Journal for Computational Methods in Engineering Science and Mechanics.
While at IUPUI, Professor Akay received the School of Engineering and Technology's The Doris H. Merritt Outstanding Leadership Award in 2002, TERA Award for Teaching Excellence in 1997, The Abraham M. Max Distinguished Research Professorship Award in 1993.
Professor Akay is a Fellow Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and a Member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).
