Professor Cox earned his B.S., 1971, from Utah State University, his J.D., 1974, from University of Utah, and his LL.M., 1980, University of Virginia. Before joining the Indiana faculty in 1986, Paul N. Cox was a professor of law at Valparaiso University, 1980-86, and a visiting professor at the school of law at the University of Utah, 1984; William Mitchell College of Law, 1985; and Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis, 1985-86.

While a student at Utah, he served on the Utah Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following law school, he served as a judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force; served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert H. McWilliams, United States Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit; and has worked briefly at various times for several law firms.

He has published extensively in a variety of journals and is the author of a treatise on the law of employment discrimination.
